The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons(NCFRMI) in a record move flagged off Resettlement centres in major cities of Nigeria notably Zamfara, Edo, Katsina and Nasarawa States.
The groundbreaking events are arguably big relief for Persons of Concern who now see their plight rapidly addressed. “We will continue to provide protection and assistance to the persons of concern,” says Hajia Imaan Sulaimano-Ibrahim in one of the ceremonies recorded in Zamfara.
She told an obviously impressed gathering that the NCFRMI was aware of its humanitarian mandate of providing protection, assistance and ensuring that durable solutions are proffered to its displaced persons and communities in the states.
That mandate is evident in the historic groundbreaking event aimed at rehabilitating, reintegrating and resettling Persons of Concern into society.
Information gathered at the scene of the event shows that Haj. Imaan is braving the odds amidst financial constraints and other related issues.
Recall that the NCFMRI began the Resettlement Cities Projects in 2020 to address critical Housing challenges faced by persons of concern especially IDP’s.
Phase 1 of the project began with an initial 4 locations in Borno, Zamfara and now expanded to Edo, Katsina and environs. Each location is to have primary healthcare facilities, educational learning centres, Skill acquisition centres, recreation areas, solar-powered boreholes and other amenities.
Hajia Imaan thanked the governor of Zamfara State His excellency Alhaji Bello Muhammed Matawalle for allocating land for the commencement of the Resettlement city.
She also hailed the contributions of the Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadiya Umar Farouk for her immense support and encouragement.
The commission plans to expand existing IDP camps into durable environmentally friendly centres to avoid the chaos of moving them to new places.
