Families of some young men hounded by Nigerian security operatives for belonging to separatist groups in the southeast have cried out over their continued harassment.
The young men were arrested, while others have been missing since being accused of belonging to the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Some of the young men include Monday Umeadi Agu (37) kanayo chukwurah chinwendu (31), Anthony Ekene Ozimorah (27), Iro Isaiah Ukonu (26), Julius Okechukwu Mbah(29), Ifeanyi Ugochukwu Appollos (33) , Kalu Arunsi Okoro (37), ThankGod Chukwudi Sylvanus (41), and Christopher Umeadi Ngozichukwu (28).
Other include Basil Mgboji Chidi (30), Agodi Chidi Venatius (29), Sunday Emeka Okorie (27) and Nnamdi Agbara Zacheus (35).
Relatives of the suspects have also gone through several harassments in the hands of security operatives.
The suspects were accused of supporting IPOB activities in contravention of the laws outlawing the group’s operations in the country.
The suspects have been forced from their homes since 2018, while others have been forced into exile for fear of being prosecuted.
The families are calling on relevant agencies to release those arrested and stop further harassment of young men from the southeast over alleged links with IPOB.
Nigerian security officials have often engaged in clashes with members of IPOB.
The group had maintained that it’s a non-violent group agitating for the emancipating of people of the southeast region. One of the relatives who spoke to this medium said his brother does not have any relationship with IPOB and could not comprehend why he’s being detained by security operatives.
