The Nigeria Police Force has arrested an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), identified as Sergeant Iloh Solomon Chukwuebuka for alleged car snatching.
Ebuka, who hails from Ufuma, Orumba North Council Area of Anambra State and attached to Nsukka Unit of the Enugu sector Command of the FRSC was arrested in a car snatching syndicate that has been terrorising Ebonyi State.
He was allegedly involved in documentation and registration of stolen cars for the gang.
The spokesman of the Ebonyi State Command, SP Chris Anyanwu, disclosed his arrest alongside other members of the syndicate that specialised in car stealing in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday.
Anyanwu noted that the principal suspect said that he gave the FRSC official three vehicles for documentation which he did.
The police pointed out that police divisions in the state especially within the Abakaliki metropolis were inundated with cases of car stealing.
He stated that information available revealed a particular modus operandi in which women who park their vehicles at the International market, Kpirikpiri market, New market (Ahia Ofuu), etc after buying stuffs, come out to discover that their vehicles have been stolen.
“Right now, I am glad to inform you that the entire syndicate of criminals comprising the thieves, receivers and their other cohorts has been busted with over 10 vehicles recovered.”
He said that the operatives picked up the kingpin of the gang, Chimezie Emeh, a 26 years old man from Ndieze 1 Okpoto in Ishielu LGA of Ebonyi State on August 31.
“This suspect specialises in stealing vehicles from the market squares in Abakaliki Metropolis. He disposes the vehicles mostly at Nsukka and other parts of Anambra and Enugu States. He uses a master key to smoothly open doors and ignitions of the vehicles.”
The suspects arrested include; Chimezie Emeh, Anthony Joseph Osilame, Peter Ozioko Egbunike and Ifeanyi Okoro Emetu.
Others include Longinus Obinna Idenyi, Ogbonnaya Neankwo, H Mezie, Eze Joshue and Nnabuike adding that vehicles recovered included; Toyota Corolla LE, Toyota Camry 2.2 model, Toyota Camry (Tiny Light) and Toyota Sienna 2000 model.
Others are Toyota Corolla DS, Toyota Camry Spider and a yellow Toyota mini-bus without registration number.
SP Anyanwu said that items recovered included; one locally made single barreled barretta pistol, 7 vehicle plate numbers and a box of assorted fetish things suspected to be charms.
