Panic gripped some top officials of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). as President Muhammadu Buhari, ordered a speedy investigation into the activities of the commission vis a vis allegations and counter allegations of corruption rocking the NDDC. .
The investigation is expected to be carried out by security agencies and members of the National Assembly
The president said such coordination had become imperative in view of the administration’s efforts to bring sanity, transparency and accountability to the management of huge resources being allocated to development of the Niger Delta sub-region.
The probe is coming at a time when allegations of corruption practices were levelled by the former acting Managing Director of the NDDC, Ms Joi Nunieh against the Minister of Niger Delta, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Malam Garba Shehu, Presidential spokesman, in a statement, said Buhari, “in his reaction to the unfolding drama, which include attacks and counter attacks between and around persons, institutions, and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)”, promised to get to the root of the matter.
It will be recalled that the acting Managing Director of the Interim Management Committee(IMC) of the NDDC, Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei and his team had on Thursday walked out on the House of Representatives Committee on NNDC that was investigating the activities of the commission
Pondei said the team was not prepared to make any presentation before the committee andhad abjected to Chairman of the Committee, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, presiding over the investigative hearing..
He said the team will only honour summons from the House of Representatives if it sets up an adhoc committee and vowed to shun further invitations from the Lower Chambers if his request was not met.
