The Department of State Services (DSS) has caved in to the threat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to mobilize its affiliates unions to embark on a nationwide strike if its leader, Joe Ajaero is not released by 12am by releasing the detained president of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
Credible feelers indicated that Ajaero was released on bail about 11:10 pm. after he wrote a statement.
His release followed threat by the NLC to mobilise its affiliates unions for a nationwide showdown with the federal government if Ajaero was not released by 12 am. on Monday/Tuesday, September 9/10.
Recall that Ajaero was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday on his way to the United Kingdom for a global Trade Union Congress meeting.
NLC had placed its affiliates’ bodies on alert.
The NLC had said in a statement by Benson Upah, its spokesperson that: “The congress will not stand idly by while the rights of its leaders and members are trampled upon.
” Accordingly, we demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Ajaero.”
