The Executive Secretary of the Greater Nigeria Initiative (GNI), a Lagos based Public spirited and Humanitarian Organisation has commended the unprecedented developments going on at the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI). The Executive Secretary Chief Richard Aburime (MNI) made the observation in a statement made available to the media in Lagos on Tuesday, 7th December, 2021.
In the statement, the Greater Initiative Organisation described as impressive the laudable efforts of the Commission’s management despite the troubling Covid-19 ravaging pandemic. “This is an environment where basic healthcare, decent hygiene, basic sanitation, exposure to abuse and violence is prevalent and the Commission is still making headway”, Chief Richard Aburime observed. He deservedly called for more support and funding to boost the Commission’s effort since the enormity of the task facing the Commission appears to be underrated. In Borno State alone in the last two years, not less than 17,000 children have been born to IDP’s in over 18 locations not to mention the other places”, he revealed.
The Executive Secretary called on Nigerians to throw their weight behind the National Commissioner of the Commission Hajia. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim for her very passionate and exemplary character she has displayed in the discharge of her duties.
The soft spoken, gentle and highly respected Honorable Commissioner has been extremely professional in her approach in discharging her mandate and alleviating the plight of the poor and disadvantaged. Her Project Zero Hunger Initiative carried out in conjunction with Defence and Police Officers Wives Association is aimed at wiping away the suffering of wounded soldiers, widows of slain soldiers, women, girls and children. “This is happening inspite of the crisis strewn environment, harsh climatic conditions, food insecurity, recurrent epidemic, poor infrastructure, terrible security situation”, declared Chief Aburime. “We need to commend her efforts for risking her life to ensure her programmes and activities get to the grassroots—and the right source
Credible Sources say the Honorable Commissioner on assumption of duty was taken aback by the sorry state of IDP’s deprived of toilet facilities, surrounded by dilapidated structures and were reportedly cooking their meals outside. “This is what Nigerians desire; someone who is focused and not easily distracted and sensitive to the plight of the poor “stated Chief Aburime.
Now, the reforms being put in place has equally caught the attention of the Global Humanitarian Community such as United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Internal Red Cross Society and not least Public Service International(PSI) ‘We indeed impressed that Refugee plight are being addressed with creation of decent hygienic centres with toilet facilities, shelter and food security.
“Definitely, Haj. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim understands the job, she is disciplined and potentially very effective”, the GNI Executive Secretary noted adding that for the first time, the primary mandate of the Commission in protection, provision of human and material resources including registration for Refugees and IDP’s is being professionally addressed.
