Pandemonium broke out at one of the Guaranty Trust Bank branches at Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 when an angry customer, identified as Sodirudeen Rufai, poured petrol on himself with the determination to set the bank building and other customers ablaze.
Gathered that Rufai, who was in the bank a day before the incident to complain about the disappearance of Five Hundred and Thirty thousand naira(₦530,000) from his account without him initiating the transaction was asked to come back the next day.
Upon his arrival at the bank the next day, sources at the bank premises revealed that the young man was attended to by a customer complain desk staff and was told that the bank cannot trace how his money disappeared from his account
Rufai was said to have raised his voice in the banking hall, demanding refund of his money to his account.
It was gathered that the bank manager came out and ordered the security to throw him out of the bank premises.
Sources squealed that many thought Rufai had left but he returned few minutes later with a 5litres keg of petrol and walked straight into the banking hall where he poured the content on himself with the aim to spark the matches and set everywhere ablaze
Sources at the bank said that bank staffs, and other customers scamper for safety leaving only Rufai in the banking hall.
it was gathered that after several plea from those who can identify the angry customer , he agreed not to spark the matches but demanded a promise from the bank manager to initiate the process to get the money back to his account immediately or he set himself and the bank building ablaze.
Effort to make the agency managing the media affairs of GTCO react to the matter failed as one of the officials of the agency contacted did not respond to our enquiries as at the time of filing this report.
