The 16-year-old marriage between Asiya, daughter of Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Inuwa Uba has crashed like a pack of an unarranged cards.

This is because the Upper Shari’a Court sitting in Kano dissolved the marriage on Thursday.

Delivering a ruling, the Judge, Malam Abdullahi Halliru said the marriage was dissolved through Khul’i (divorce by Islamic means).

Halliru ordered the plaintiff to return N50,000 paid as dowry by the respondent.

“The conditions the respondent earlier raised before the court should be based on Islamic Sunnah on Khul’i.

“Khul’i is strictly based on returning the dowry given to a woman, the condition should not affect her in anyway especially in giving out her wealth”

Earlier, the Petitioner’s Counsel, Ibrahim Aliyu-Nassarawa, told the court that his client insists on returning the N50,000 bride price received from her husband in exchange for divorce.

Asiya through her counsel, Barrister Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa, approached the court seeking to dissolve her marriage, stating that she was fed up, and expressed her readiness to return the sum of N50,000 received as dowry.

In his response to the claim of the plaintiff, a counsel to the respondent, Umar I Umar, said that the plaintiff is beyond the issue of dowry alone and argued that Asiya held some properties belonging to his client.

Delivering the judgement, the trial judge, Mallam Abdullahi Haliru, said the evidence adduced during the cause of the trial proved that the plaintiff received the sum of N50,000.

He said the court gave the judgment based on what is supposed to be the basis of the marriage which is the dowry.

The Judge ordered Asiya to return the sum of N50,000 dowry.

Addressing the court after the judgement, the counsel to the respondent, Umar I Umar prayed to the court to supply him with records of the proceeding, indicating his interest to go to the Upper Court and test the analysis of the judgement.
