EDITORIAL: Remembering Pa James Jimmy Enyeh, educationist with a difference

The English poet, Alexander Pope once noted that “a little learning is a dangerous thing” this witty saying might have had a profound effect in the life and the impact late Pa James Jimmy Enyeh made in the lives of his students and all those who encountered him.

May 27, 2025  marks 10 years of his passing and he was laid to rest on November 28, 2015.

The serene town of Boboroku, in Delta state knew that a meteor had fallen the day he was laid to rest at his residence in Boboroku, Ijhere, Delta State. The measure of aman is not actually the size of his bank account but the impact he has had on others, this was evident that interment day going by effervescence of tributes and testimonies.

Pa Enyeh started out in life as a Teacher at the famous Metropolitan College, Isolo, Lagos State, where he proved his mettle as a brilliant teacher, educationist and stickler for discipline and morals . He taught Accounting to senior students of the school, and in no time his razor sharp intellect became proverbial. He taught most of the students without recourse to his textbooks

He instilled discipline and morals into the students and was nicknamed “Papa” on account of being a disciplinarian. He curbed the excesses of some of the students who were lackadaisical to their studies.

The, Uhrobo, Delta State born lecturer was revered for his pedigree, which speaks volume.

Many could not but marvel at his oratorical skill which made his students to give him the moniker “Prof”. He had a towering disposition which could not be equalled by his contemporaries.

After putting in over three decades in the teaching profession, he resigned and joined a shipping firm known as Coastal Services Nigeria Limited, Apapa, Lagos State as an Accountant and rose to the position of Head, Credit Control Department before he retired to venture into private business.

Pa Enyeh who delved into food merchandise and was basically into the buying and selling of Cassava flakes popularly known as Garri. He did that for some years and later retired.

As Head, Credit Control department of Coastal Services Nigeria Limited, he was widely described as an upright mesmerizing maestro by his expatriate boss, this is because he ensured that all company’s debtors paid up to the last penny.

Pa Enyeh’s predilection for honesty and transparency are legendary and these qualities endeared him to his boss and subordinates.

Before his demise, he was loved by all those who crossed his path on account of his accommodating nature and humility.
The late Octogenarian who died at the age of 85, was born on the 20th of March 1930 to the family of Chief and Mrs. Orere Enyeh

He started his education at Oyovwi Primary School in 1944 and completed his primary education in 1950.

He proceeded to Zik Academy, Sapele for his secondary education from 1950 to 1955. He did his higher education on a part time basis with Pitman Secretarial Studies, London where he studied Accountancy.
Enyeh’s type in the education sector is rare today given the decadence and corruption and dysfunction that have taken over all segments of the Nigerian life including education sector.

Though he had made his mark and gone he continues to live in the memories of those who love education, honesty, integrity and right conduct. He has slipped into the pantheon of saints of education.

Pa Enyeh is survived by his lovely wife Mrs. Regina Onomiowiakpo Enyeh and children which include the publisher of NATIONAL WAVES Newspaper and Magazine,  Mr Victory Jimmy Enyeh
