In the last couple of months there has been disquieting, gory reports of killings by individuals believed to be stressed and under pressure.
Only yesterday, a man in Imo state beheaded his brother -in- law, another murdered his aged father in cold blood somewhere in eastern part of the country.
Weeks back, a 33-year-old housewife, Comfort Tinubu, allegedly stabbed her 39-year-old husband, Olusegun Tinubu, during a dispute in Ibadan
Penultimate week, another woman stabbed her husband to death in Oyo state, while in Gombe , a bride poisoned the bridegroom and some guests.
November last year, a 30-year old man, Motunrayo Olaniyi, was arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly stabbing his newly wedded wife, Olajumoke, 25, to death in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.
The suspect was said to have locked his wife in a room after stabbing her several times while they were having a heated argument.
These reports are endless and portends danger to the social health of the people, which many have correctly interpreted as height of dysfunction believed to have been fostered by economic and familial pressures.
The times are hard no doubts for individuals as a result of meltdown we are currently witnessing.
We encourage Nigerians and family members who see signs of stress in one of their own to persuade such to seek therapy and sound counselling before it spills into dangerous dimensions.
There’s need for governments at all levels to bolster social safety nets to ameliorate the sufferings of the people leading to stressful condition and eventual violence.
We also implore religious and Faith – based institutions to deepen preachment on the virtue of tolerance and patience. If these measures are put in place, it will reduce tensions and the preponderance of violence and suicidal aggressive tendency to kill.
