By Adebayo Obajemu
At the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) forum, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Barrister Adewole Adebayo dissected the key challenges – economy and security- facing the country and submitted that a proper government in place will once and for all resolve these challenging recurring problems.
In his view, the challenge of insecurity is largely spurred by lack of.proper government to institute good governance that will do things the proper way unecumbered by those primordial sentiments which have led us to current high level of insecurity.
He said what obtains in the country today is the allocation sensitive of security position based on tribal and religious affiliation instead of time-tested competence.
According to him, security goes beyond the traditional notion of law enforcement and encompasses the president putting his foot down on his cabinet to ensure they do things in the proper way. He emphasised that all ministers must be seen to be alive to their responsibility, and anything short of this can breed insecurity. “If we are to enjoy secured Nigeria, all citizens must have a sense of belonging”
A serious government, he said, must have security committee that’s up and doing, while the office of National Security Adviser must have a coordinating power.
On the economy, Adebayo said the reality today in the country is that we have two diverse types of economy- economy for government, and economy for the people.
In his view, the current system has no place for the masses, thus the reason for the recurring problem of unemployment, which in turn gives rise to insecurity.
He said until there’s a proper well thought economic plans, which will take into consideration the involvement and input of the private sector, and competent government officials saddled with policy making and implementation, the country will continue to wobble and teeters on the brink.
If elected, Adebayo said he will bring about a new Nigeria .
