The Nigerian textile industry is already endangered, and that’s no news. It faces multiple challenges, including smuggling, high production costs, and competition from foreign imports, particularly from China. These issues which left unaddressed by successive governments in the last three decades, have gradually morphed into a regrettable but avoidable decline in local production, factory closures, and rising unemployment.
Though there have been faint efforts here and there by governments to revitalize the sector.
But these efforts amount to a drop in the ocean as inadequate infrastructure, power shortages, and inconsistent policies have further increased the problems.
Government is aware of special challenges such as smuggling and counterfeiting, a growing challenge which the Customs has not intensified efforts to stem
This rampant smuggling of foreign textiles and counterfeiting has gradually eroded the market for locally produced goods, making it difficult for Nigerian manufacturers to compete.
NATIONAL WAVES is aware that the high costs of raw materials, spare parts, and electricity, coupled with the depreciation of the naira, has further exacerbated production expenses for local manufacturers, making them less competitive.
Competition from Imports is another challenge.
The influx of cheaper imported textiles, especially from China, has flooded the market and put local producers at a disadvantage. This coupled with infrastructure deficiencies:
Lack of reliable power supply, inadequate transportation infrastructure, and outdated technology have hindered production and increase costs.
Inconsistent government policies such as change in import regulations, tariffs, and other policies have created uncertainty for businesses and make it difficult to plan for long-term investment.
The issue of lack of local patronage is another factor. Many Nigerians prefer imported goods over locally made textiles, further impacting the demand for domestically produced.
Corruption within customs and related agencies have been known to facilitate smuggling and unfair competition, further disadvantaging local producers.
NATIONAL WAVES enjoins government to come up with policies that will enhance the productivity of textile industry.
