United States President Donald Trump has again double down on the imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian imports.
Trump had ordered 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on goods from China, raising fears of a global trade war.
Trump also stated he would impose a 10% tariff on all energy imports from Canada.
In response to Trump’s new trade measures, Canada announced 25% tariffs on a range of U.S. imports.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement on Saturday, cautioning Americans about the consequences of Trump’s actions.
Speaking at a news conference, Trudeau detailed that Canada would impose tariffs on C$155 billion ($107 billion) worth of U.S. goods.
However, in a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump said, “We pay hundreds of Billions of Dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why? There is no reason. We don’t need anything they have.
“We have unlimited Energy, should make our own Cars, and have more Lumber than we can ever use. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true!
“Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!”
