Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the Bayelsa State government’s N45billion new Secretariat complex.

The fiery lawyer condemned the Bayelsa State government’s decision to award the contract, describing it as “outrageous” and “extravagant” considering the current economic hardship which residents of the state and other Nigerians are currently facing.

Adeyanju disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.

He called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the contract award, citing concerns over transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.

He wrote: “I condemn the Bayelsa State Government’s outrageous decision to award a N45 billion contract for a new Secretariat complex. This extravagant expenditure is unacceptable, especially considering the state’s financial constraints and pressing developmental needs.

“I urge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to promptly investigate this contract award, ensuring transparency and accountability in the utilisation of public funds. The people of Bayelsa State deserve to know how their resources are being allocated.

“This lavish spending undermines the trust between the government and its citizens. I call on the EFCC to:

“1. Investigate the contract award process for potential irregularities.

2. Ensure compliance with public procurement regulations.

“The EFCC must safeguard Nigeria’s financial integrity and hold public officials accountable for their actions.”
