Napoli finally ended their long wait to win Italy’s prestigious Serie A on Thursday after a 1 – 1 draw at Udinese.
The draw secured for Napoli their third league title with a record equalling five games to play.
Victor Osimhen scored the decisive goal in the second half as Napoli came from trailing Udinese. Sandi Lovric’s opener shortly before halftime had secured an early lead for Udinese.
It could be recalled that Napoli under Diego Amando Maradona had won the league title in 1987 and 1990, respectively.
Thousands of fans in Udine, Stadio Maradona in Naples and all southern Italy’s biggest city had trooped out onto to celebrate the feat; at the final whistle; ending 33 years of waiting to win the Serie A title.
Napoli supporters erupted with joy at the Dacia Arena, streaming onto the pitch.
Lucio Spalletti’s side had dominated the current season, creating moments of tension with Napoli fans as they partied openly on their home ground after every win.
“Delivering the Scudetto to Napoli will remain in my heart forever,” said Victor Osimhen in a post- match press interview.
Spalletti squad will receive an emotional welcome when they return to Naples. Their next home game is against Florentina on Sunday.#
