AEIAN Celebrates 2021 World Environment Day

Association for Environmental Impact Assessment of Nigeria (AEIAN) will celebrate 2021 World Environment Day (WED) with virtual and physical conference on June 5, 2021 in Abuja.

The virtual conference will be held on Zoom by 4pm with a renowned Professor Ani Nkang, VC Arthur Jarvis University on hand to speak on the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

Speaking to Journalists in Abuja yesterday, the President of the Association, Mallam Ahmed Sanda said, “Our association as the umbrella body of Impact Assessment Practitioners in Nigeria, decided to celebrate this years WED to align with the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, as proclaimed by the UN General Assembly”.

AEIAN as an affiliate of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) and formerly known as IAIA-Nigeria, the association governs the conduct and practice of environmental and social impact assessment in Nigeria.

The highlight during the conference will be the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Association for Environmental Impact Assessment of Nigeria (AEIAN) and the Association of Environment Reporters of Nigeria (AERN).

AEIAN as a body is to seek to bring together all professionals, experts, advocates, academics, students, civil servants, and policy makers’ etc, working in the environmental and social impact assessment fields in Nigeria, to deepen the discourse on the environment and sustainable development.

The body is also to provide a platform for the development and sharing of knowledge, innovation and best practices towards the effective implementation of sustainable development policies and programmes in Nigeria.

The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration following a proposal and resolution for action by over 70 countries from all latitudes.

This years WED theme is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, for the benefit of people and nature. It aims to halt the degradation of ecosystems, and restore them to achieve global goals.

Only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change, and stop the collapse of biodiversity.

In 2021, the global official celebrations will be held on 4-5 June through a Virtual Launch Gala welcoming the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The event will include inspiring messages from world leaders, activists, celebrities, and musical performances as well as Pakistan’s host country programme
