Nurses in Delta

Patients in public hospitals will not be attended to by nurses and midwives in the next few weeks, this is because, Nurses in Delta under the aegis of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), have commenced an indefinite strike.
The industrial action began on Friday.
A statement by the association said the decision was sequel to the resolutions adopted by the State Executive Council (SEC)-in-session during an emergency meeting on November 24, 2020.
NANNM said the move became necessary due to the unwillingness of the Delta State Ministry of Health to meet the association’s demands as contained in the 14-day ultimatum to the Delta State government and other correspondences to the Commissioner of Health on the abuse/violation of the Civil Service Rules and Scheme of Service as it relates to the career progression of nurses and midwives in Delta State.
According to the directive of the leaders of NANNM for members to observe the strike, the body said skeletal services will not be provided while the strike lasts.
The association added that the strike will not be called off until all their demands are met.
A nurse who spoke to Oasis Magazine (OM) under conditions of anonymity said the strike was important to “save the soul of the nursing profession from oppressors.”
Adding: “Professional hierarchy is not negotiable; the nursing profession is not for sale.
“We want them to employ more nurses for quality service and they must know that the DNS office is also not for appointment.”
The nurse also called for placement for laterally transfered nurses.
